Tumakuru district is located approximately between 13º20'24'' N latitude and 76º6'0''E longitude. The district consists of ten talukas viz, Chikkanayakanahalli, Gubbi, Koratagere, Kunigal, Mudugiri, Pavagada, Sira, Tiptur, Turuvekere and Tumakuru. The total geographical area is 1059.7 (’000 ha) with a mean annual rainfall of 622.0 mm with 32 rainy days. The month with the highest number of rainy days is July (21.73 days). The month with the lowest number of rainy days is January (1.10 days). Tumakuru district comes under both Central and Southern dry zone of Karnataka. The geological formation of the Tumakuru district is made up of cretaceous red loamy soils, red sandy loam soils and sandy clay loam, loamy soils, sandy soils etc. The major crops cultivated in Tumakuru district are finger millet, groundnut, maize, redgram, field bean, paddy, sunflower, bajra and horticulture crops like fruits guava, banana pomegranate, sapota, vegetables and plantation crops like arecanut and coconut.
The fertility status of Tumakuru district showed that, among major nutrients, available nitrogen varied from low to medium, maximum area was high in phosphorus and sulphur whereas, potassium ranged from medium to high.. In case of micronutrients, only zinc was deficient to an extent of 28 per cent, however, other micronutrients viz, iron, manganese and copper are sufficient.
