Chamarajanagara district is located in the southern tip of Karnataka and lies between the North latitude 11º40'58" and 12º06'32" and East longitude 76º24'14" and 77º46'55". It falls in the Southern Dry zone. The geographical area of district is about 5,101 km2 comprising of five taluks viz, Chamarajanagara, Kollegala, Gundlupete, Yalanduru and Hanuru. The annual rainfall ranges from 670.6-888.6 mm of which more than 50% rain is received in Kharif season and the soils are red sandy loam in major areas and red loamy in the remaining areas. The principal crops grown are rice, finger millet, sugarcane, turmeric, banana, jowar, maize, horsegram, bengalgram, blackgram, greengram, groundnut, sunflower, coconut, potato, tomato, chilli.
