Mandya district is located approximately between 12º31'12"N latitude and 76º54'00"E longitude. Which consists of seven taluks namely Krishnarajpet, Srirangapatna, Pandavapura, Malavalli, Mandya, Madduru and Nagamangala. The total geographic area is 496.1 (’000 ha) with a mean annual rainfall of 667 mm which comes under Southern Dry zone. The geological formation of Mandya district is made up of cretaceous red sandy to red clayey soils. The major crops cultivated in Mandya district are sugarcane, paddy, finger millet, pulses, sesamum, vegetables, and horticultural crops like fruits and plantation crops.
The fertility status of Mandya district showed that, among major nutrients, available N varied from low to medium, available P medium to high and K ranged from low to medium in the district. In case of available sulphur, maximum area was medium followed by high and low fertility status. As per the available micronutrients, Zn and B was deficient to the extent of 37 and 55 per cent of the area, respectively, however, other micronutrients viz., Fe, Mn and Cu were sufficient in the soils of Mandya district.
