Kolar district is located approximately between 13º7'59.88"N latitude and 78º7'59.88"E longitude which as of 5 taluks viz., Bangarpet, Kolar, Malur, Mulbagal and Srinivasapura. The total geographic area is 375.0 (’000 ha) with a mean annual rainfall of 686 mm and mean annual temperature is above 27ºC. It comes under the Eastern Dry zone. The geological formation of the Kolar district is made up of cretaceous, red loamy soils, red sandy loam soils and lateritic soils deposits of 225.0, 131.2 and 18.7 (‘000 ha) respectively. The major crops cultivated in Kolar district are finger millet, groundnut, maize, red gram, paddy, sunflower, bajra and horticulture crops like fruits and vegetables with a net sown area of 287.2 (‘000 ha) and the cropping intensity is 102.8 per cent.
The fertility status of Kolar district showed that among major nutrients, nitrogen low to medium while phosphorus and potassium were medium and high in the district. In case of available sulphur, maximum area is medium and high. With respect to available micronutrients viz., zinc, iron, copper and manganese is found to be sufficient in the whole district.
